The shop was cramped and dimly lit, but Vault was used to that kind of establishment. The layers of dust were only visible by the sunlight from a tiny window at the top of the basement wall. The rot guaranteed it would never open again. The ceiling was decorated, in the loosest sense, with a disparate collection of gear. Most of it was junk, but he couldn't help letting his eyes poke around above him.
Hart, the shop owner, was busy in the back preparing Vault's order. Hart knew these things were garbage, but he also knew that there were always people willing to project their own value onto things. That's why it was all hanging from the ceiling, dancing in your face. All it needed to do was catch the eye of the right person, and it'd fetch any price.
Vault was idly analyzing the ramifications of this business model, successfully putting himself to sleep, when the lone window burst into the room. Vault's first impulse was that the window had had enough. It was too old and had seen too many horrific things occur here. But in the moment it took for his eyes to lift from floor to ceiling, he felt the shadow momentarily fill the room with darkness.
"What the fuck was that?" Hart stumbled from the back room as the shadow faded. "What did you break this time?"
The offending rock was just settling at Vault's feet. "Hart, we both know I didn't break your purifier. Anyway, I wasn't even touching it this time. The window." Vault pointed.
Hart squinted at the hole and then bobbed his head as he let his eyes gather more evidence. He spotted the rock resting on the floor in a nest of glass shards and dingy shag carpeting.
"You been making more enemies while I was away? Or are these the same ones?" Vault grinned.
"Probably Llana. She's been playing these stupid fucking kids games with me since I left her sister."
"Weren't you two engaged?"
"Let's just say it didn't work out. Anyway, here's your item." Hart reached into the void of the back room and produced a perfect black cylinder about the size of his forearm. "Do tell me you'll be paying with cash."
"And rob you the opportunity to up my debt in your ledger? I think not, Hart. But with Justine's plan and this little monster, you'll be getting your money soon enough. Plus interest."
"You're so thoughtful. That reminds me, be sure to keep from dropping that thing. Because I really want my money."
