Top Round is an upscale, old-school roast beef joint. I love this place. It has an awesome retro vibe, and it’s so fun to go here — especially on a hot summer day. It isn’t all just novelty though; this roast beef is the jam. But first…
…CHEESE FRIES. Imagine a nice heaping bowl of curly fries. Who doesn’t like curly fries? Now imagine them smothered in ooey gooey homemade cheese wizz. Yes, Top Round makes its own wizz. This stuff is thick and creamy and melty and heavenly. The base is American cheese with some blue cheese and seasonings added for extra spice. I had never even formed the concept of a gourmet cheese wizz until I visited, and it’s wonderful. Pour it in a bowl, and let me drink it.
Okay, let’s be frank (pardon the pun), this is not an attractive wiener. It doesn’t matter. It’s great. It’s pure. It’s all I could ever ask a hot dog to be. It doesn’t need ketchup or relish or anything else. It’s a damn good dog. Oh, and it comes on a Hawaiian bun. Enough said.
Okay, enough with the sideshows; here’s the star — DA BEEF & CHEESE. This is where it’s at. It’s beef on a plain bun with the homemade wizz and their house sauce. It’s a classic, and they keep it simple and tasty. The beef is gloriously tender and dripping and sliced ultra thin. The creamy cheese and meaty beef flavors are cut by the sharp, sweet sauce. It’s messy and delicious.
Now on to the chicken sandwich. The chicken is brined and fried and served with pickles and mayo. Again, simple. (I’m beginning to think I have a thing for simple-yet-satisfying food.) The flavor profile is similar to the beef sandwich except that it’s fried chicken instead of beef (duh) and there’s no sweetness. The creamy mayo and vinegar pickles are the perfect complement to the tender chicken. I’m super into fried chicken sandwiches, and this one satisfies.
And to wash it all down, the obligatory vanilla shake. In fact, Top Round has a big selection of frozen custard and shake and malt options, and they’re almost as good as the roast beef. It would not be unusual to come here just for the treats.
So that’s Top Round. Come for the kitsch; stay for the wizz!
